Timonen Stays, Simmonds Returns and Gameday

Signing Extension:
The Philadelphia Flyers signed defenseman Kimmo Timonen to a 1 year extension worth $6 million. Timonen was in the last year of his contract this season which was paying $3 million; however, his cap hit was $6.3 million. Next year will be Timonen's 7th season with the Flyers. Timonen has scored 28 goals and 184 assists in 408 games with the Flyers. He currently leads all Flyers in average time on ice with 23:06 minutes. GM Paul Holmgren said of the signing, "Kimmo's presence on the ice for us and in our locker room is invaluable. We look forward to him continuing his all-around play for us."

Injury Update:
Wayne Simmonds practiced with the team yesterday in full contact gear. Simmonds has not yet been officially cleared to play, but he said he's ready. Simmonds passed his baseline tests and has been headache and symptom free all week.  He is just waiting for the go-ahead from the doctors, which could come this morning. If Simmonds suits up today, which seems very likely, Tom Sestito will likely be scratched.

Game-Day:
The Philadelphia Flyers (4-6-1, 9 pts) host the Carolina Hurricanes (5-4, 10 pts) this afternoon at 1 PM. Carolina has won 3 of their last 4 games, with their one loss coming against the Flyers, who beat them 5-3 last Saturday.
The Hurricanes are led by the Staal Brothers, Eric and Jordan, who have combined for 20 points in 9 games. Carolina leads the league in shots per game with 37 per game. So Ilya Bryzgalov will most likely have a pretty busy day. Bryzgalov (4-5-1, 2.20 GAA) will likely get the start against Cam Ward (3-3, 3.17 GAA).
